HEALTH INSURANCE
Health insurance is an important factor to many Australians. You might get some free medical treatment under Medicare (even if you have New Zealand citizenship), but you might want extra cover in case of severe illness or injury, or simply want the extra care from private healthcare.
You can choose different levels of Health cover according to your personal circumstances and needs. You can even get Hospital Cover which removes the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
What types of Health Insurance are there?
There are many types of cover but usually they fall into the following main categories:
- Hospital Cover
Hospital cover generally allows the policyholder to choose hospital, your own doctor and whether you prefer a private or public hospital.
- Extras Cover
Extras cover covers you for things in everyday life which may not be covered under Medicare, like optical needs, dental treatment or physiotherapy.
- Packaged Cover
Packaged cover offers a combination of hospital and extras cover. You get the 'best of both worlds' and might even receive an annual bonus.
Where can I get Health Insurance?
There are many good insurance companies in Australia who offer a range of insurance types, or who just focus on health insurance. To find one which suits you, look around and compare offers. For a quick reference guide, check Which Way To Pay Australia's comparison page.
